Debian 3.0

I have neglected to post here, likely since no one ever reads this….

Anyway, I did post to the NCOLUG website that Debian 3.0 has arrived. This was several weeks ago. Since then I have ordered and received the CD’s, an 8 CD set. I will be looking forward to changing my distribution at some point. I will have to test it out on a seperate partition as a sacrificial lamb…

Playing DVDs

I have been enjoying playing DVDs lately under Linux. One problem, interlacing. My favorite player, Ogle, doesn’t support deinterlacing just yet. There are other players like Xine that offer that support, but I have been unable to get support working for encrypted DVDs, like “The American President.”

If anyone knows how, leave me an email or a comment on this entry, and I will have to try it out.

The DopeFish Lives!!!

After the upgrade, I started playing around with DOSEMU, a full-fledged DOS emulator. The FreeDOS kernel is a little lacking, so I threw my copy of the Windows 95 DOS on there, and it is working to a degree.

Anything that seriously changes the screen resolution or bit depth don’t seem to work, although I probably can tweak the configuration to fix that. Duke Nukem 3D and Liero won’t run, but I did get ZZT and Commander Keen functioning…..\n\nkeenonlinux.png

System Upgrade

This weekend, I upgraded to system to Mandrake 8.0 and am still recovering from a lack of sleep. ;-) The setup is good, except for a few key components. WindowMaker needs a new install, and Mozilla could use an upgrade. Gaim is already there, and I love the new kmail and knode. Xchat is a newer version with cool features. The only major problem is the kernel. It is 2.4.3 with all the associated bugs. I just have to make sure that I print the options from the Mandrake kernel 2.4.3 for framebuffer and non-fb kernels. It supported my CD-RW and both sound cards with kernel modules out of the box with even more modules if necessary. I still can’t get my Logitech USB mouse working properly, but I will soon. Just a matter of modules.
